Introduction:
Welcome to PopUp! Deluxe. PopUp! was designed for the
minimalist in all of us. PopUp! puts Program Manager groups
at your fingertips, and tucks Program Manager away. All
Program Manager features can be accessed by simply clicking
the right mouse button while pointing at the desktop. Before
it can be successfully used however, you must make sure of one
thing. You cannot have more than 30 Program Manager groups.
If you do then you really have more than you need anyway, so its
time to rearrange your desktop. If you have less than 30 groups
simply drag the PopUp! icon into the startup group. To run it
now just double-click on it!
Rearranging Your Desktop:
We suggest you start by setting up new groups with generic
subjects such as Applications, Games, Communications, etc.
After that go through each of your old groups and drag the
program icons into their respective groups. You can safely delete any
ReadMe style icons, unless you do in fact read them on a regular
basis. Deleting the icon won't delete the actual file so you
could still access it later. If you should fill one of your new
generic groups then make more specific groups with that
heading. For example Games: Strategy, Games: Arcade, and
Games: Fantasy. Then sort the full generic group into the specific
group. There is no need to be to specific unless a generic group
contains many icons. When you have finished sorting delete all
of your old groups except of course your StartUp group. Your
desktop should have less groups which make more sense at this
time. Here is an example list of groups:
Accessories
Communications
Databases
Enhancements
Games: Arcade
Games: Chance
Games: Fantasy
Games: Parlor
Games: Strategy
Graphics
Household Apps
Library
Programming
Sound
Spreadsheets
Startup
Utilities: File
Utilities: System
Wordprocessing
As you can see there is a place for everything and it only took
19 groups. Once you have finished rearranging you can continue
with PopUp!
Troubleshooting:
Because PopUp! must watch for mouse clicks on the desktop, if
you are running a program which blocks it, the clicks may not be
seen. If your desktop program is not recognized by PopUp! then
you must add /v to the command line under its Program Manager
properties so the line reads similar to this:
c:\popup\popup.exe /v
This puts PopUp! into its visible mode. You will see a clock
display with a menu under it you can move it to anywhere on the
screen and click the menu to access PopUp!
Since PopUp! gets its information through a DDE Link to Program
Manager, you must be running Program Manager as your shell.
PopUp! is not compatible with replacement shells.
PopUp! Deluxe Seems Slow:
Pay attention to what sounds you use and when. When a sound
gets accessed it must be loaded from disk, and this is most likely
the delay you are experiencing. If it seems a while from the
time you hit the right mouse button till the time the menu
shows up, assign no sound to the activate event.
Icon Hider:
Use Icon Hider with caution! Icon Hider uses the icon caption.
"Media Player" is not the same as "Media Player [Playing]" and
can lead you to problems.
STARTUP.BAT:
In order to accomodate different .INI files for the same
programs yo may be running in different themes, there is a
shell feature built in to a theme change. During a theme
change PopUp! will look in the theme directory located in
the programs home directory for a STARTUP.BAT file. If it
finds one it will run it before bringing Windows back up.
Use it to make any changes to INI files or whatever. DO NOT
change WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI!
